Sydney Tram No 948 was unusual in that its passengers did not have to pay any fare. This tram, stoutly built except for its roof, transported prisoners between Long Bay Gaol and Darlinghurst Police Station which was adjacent to the Court House. It operated between 1909 and 1950 when it was replaced by road transport. In 1946 two prisoners armed with a bread saw cut a hole in the roof and made their escape only to be recaptured on the following day.
